Until now, the “Gerakan Masjid Bersih” movement has benefited over 270,000 mosques in various parts of Indonesia. This year it continues with mosque cleaning activities in five cities, with cleaning products and tools being distributed to 50,000 mosques in 15 provinces. In Jakarta, as the final city, this activity has been conducted with 200 members of the local mothers’ community, marbot and volunteers to help the marbot prepare cleaner, more hygienic mosques during Ramadan.
“Gerakan Masjid Bersih 2025” has already conducted mosque cleaning activities in Semarang, Yogyakarta, Padang, Surabaya, and today closed with Jakarta. In addition, this program also distributed product packages and cleaning tools to 50,000 mosques in 15 provinces, one of which contains Wipol's flagship carbolic floor cleaning and disinfectant product, Wipol Sereh & Jeruk.
This product containing the active ingredients of pine oil and benzalkonium chloride, which are clinically proven to be 100X effective in killing germs and dangerous viruses such as S. aureus, E. hirae, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, Vaccinia virus as well as eliminating unpleasant odors. Moreover, the whole package is supplemented with educational materials about maintaining cleanliness. These will be used to familiarize the local communities around their mosques with the basic principles of cleanliness so that worshipers can be inspired to also apply them in their own homes.
Nurdiana Darus, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Unilever Indonesia, explained, "Held since 2017, every year the ‘Gerakan Masjid Bersih’ program always has a different focus. This year we specifically want to embrace the communities and mothers’ groups to support the duties of the marbot during Ramadan. As a result of the busy worshipping activities and gatherings, mosques and all their facilities become more prone to getting dirty. Unfortunately, the marbot have limited abilities and means to maintain their cleanliness for the entire month."
"For this reason, in every mosque cleaning activity we invite hundreds of mothers to work together with the marbot to clean the floors, hallways, toilets and ablution rooms of their mosques to ensure they are free from germs and viruses. We also show our appreciation for the marbot by giving them several incentives, like additional cleaning products for one year, so that they can continue to enthusiastically maintain the cleanliness and comfort of their mosques," Nurdiana added.
These efforts are important because nowadays the importance of the marbot is often forgotten or ignored, they often work behind the scenes – even voluntarily – without adequate assistance and appreciation. In fact, the marbot’s role in their mosques brings real benefits to the people. According to the Kompas R & D poll in 2024, 82.9% of respondents from 38 provinces admitted to feeling the benefits of the daily duties carried out by their marbot[a].
H. Rudiantara, Deputy Chairman of the DMI Central Leadership said, "DMI always encourages the local communities to bring prosperity to their mosques – and vice versa - how the mosques can help their local communities prosper as well. To both recognize and appreciate the work of all mosque administrators, especially the marbot to ensure the prosperity of the mosque and serv the people, DMI has enacted many initiatives aimed at empowering and supporting their role.”
“However, the contributions and collaboration of all parties are still needed, including manufacturers such as Wipol and of course the local communities. Through various activities in the ‘Gerakan Masjid Bersih 2025’, DMI and Wipol work together to embrace all parties to support the marbot to carry out their duties, especially during Ramadan."
In one such initiative, Wipol presented a video entitled “Hidup Ajaib Marbot Masjid”, which was aired on YouTube Asumsi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XkYSpg0SVE) and has succeeded in raising awareness and creating conversations in local communities about the important role of the marbot. In addition, by distributing product packages and cleaning tools, the “Gerakan Masjid Bersih 2025” program has helped at least 50,000 marbots across the nation to maintain their mosques.
Ustadzah Aini Aryani, LC. commented "Purity and cleanliness are highly prioritized in Islam, especially in the mosque environments as houses of worship. For example, the hallway areas of mosques, which are heavily traveled by worshipers and even used as places of prayer during the busy moments of Ramadan, cleaner and more hygienic floors accompanied by a refreshing fragrance will certainly create peace and solemnity during worship. For this reason, maintaining the cleanliness of the mosques, a responsibility carried out daily by the marbot, is a noble task.”
“The book of Ath-Thabaqat al-Kabir tells how the Prophet SAW really loved and cared about the marbot. When a marbot named Ummu Mahjan died, the Prophet even prayed for his illumination at his grave. It is fitting that we emulate the Prophet Muhammad by loving and supporting our marbot, as is done in the ‘Gerakan Masjid Bersih 2025’ program. Hopefully, this endeavor can empower them to carry out their routines even more effectively."
Teuku Wisnu, a celebrity involved in today's activity, said this, "The mosque has become a ‘second home’ for me and my family, especially during Ramadan. I naturally have to make sure that the mosque we visit is clean so that we can worship and meet each other in peace. So, I really appreciate the efforts of the marbot and try to ease their work by doing simple things, like ensuring that our family always maintains cleanliness while in the mosque.”
“I therefore appreciate Wipol's initiative through the ‘Gerakan Masjid Bersih 2025’, which today gives me, Shireen, and the women of our community the opportunity to directly help the marbot clean the mosque. Insha Allah, it can be a form of worship and bring blessings to all of us."
"Thank you for the cooperation of the Central DMI, DMI Regions, and all mosque administrators involved so that, Alhamdulillah, the entire series of ‘Gerakan Masjid Bersih 2025’ programs can run smoothly. Insha Allah, all the agendas that we carry out can bring goodness and benefits to the marbot as well as all mosques’ congregations, and Muslims in various parts of Indonesia," Nurdiana concluded.
